About FAIRFM

MC Millan and DJ Rogue rockin the boat at FAIR 88.8 FM, Gallery Central, Perth, Western Australia, 2011
Founded in 2008, FAIRFM is a not-for-profit, artistic research initiative supporting the exploration of audio frequencies, encouraging open and expressive experimentation in radio broadcast and interactive audio. Inspired by past initiative such as Radio Alice and Berkeley Radio, FAIRFM creates an experimental space for innovative social interactions through the use of a nomadic micro-broadcast radio station installed in various urban locations. From a shipwrecked radio station to a free range recording studio, each installation sees the station created differently, taking a new form inspired by those involved.
Looking for a way to develop the lines of communication, we transform art spaces and galleries into our studio as a means of engaging interested parties to explore the invisible boundaries of radio. What can happen when you gift a functioning nomadic radio station/recording studio to the listeners…no wires attached? Currently we are in Western Australia. Open to anyone and everyone, the station provides a means for creative community and encourages the practice of free communication.
This site acts as both a resource and an archive for past, present and on-going projects. Specifically engaged with free radio communications and interactive sound art, FAIRFM aims to expand upon the current state of communications broadcast through engaging cultural, social and technological interventions and initiatives. If you would like to contribute to a project or develop your own project please contact FAIRFM here. Help broaden the cast!
